The Chestnut mushroom is a cooler temperature loving species most commonly found growing in clusters on dead or dying hardwood trees, primarily beech. These culinary mushrooms are known for having a crispy or almost crunchy texture with a mild earthy flavour and a peppery finish. They are most commonly cultivated indoors on supplemented sawdust blocks.
